When to Remodel Your Closet
Closets can provide valuable extra storage in your home, especially if you don’t have an attic or basement. However, it’s easy for a closet to become overfilled and disorganized. In this case, when your closet no longer meets your storage needs, a closet remodel can offer you more storage space and make your stored items easier to find and access. But how do you know when to remodel a closet? You can ask yourself several questions to determine whether your closet could benefit from a remodel.
Question #1: Do I Have Enough Closet Space For My Needs?
If you find that you don’t seem to have enough closet space, you will want to consider:
- Am I storing too many things in my closet? If your closet is overflowing with stored items, think about whether the items in your closet really need to be stored there. Do your winter boots and coats need to be left in your bedroom closet all year, or can they be stored in a basement or attic? In addition, before you decide to remodel your closet, take everything out of the closet and decide which items can be sold or donated. In some cases, paring down the contents of your closet may provide you with enough extra space that you will not need a full closet remodel.
- Is the closet design efficient? Many closets have only one hanging bar, and perhaps a single shelf. In most closets, this makes for a lot of wasted space. Store-bought or custom-built closet organizers may help.
If you find that you don’t have enough closet space, or that the space you have is not being used effectively, it may be time for a closet remodel. Even if you don’t increase the size of the closet, a remodel will store your items more efficiently, and allow you to fit more items in the closet.
Question #2: Am I Having Trouble Finding Things in My Closets?
If you have difficulty finding things in your closet, it’s probably not as organized as it could be. For example, in a closet with only one hanging bar and one shelf, items can begin piling up on the floor. Storing too many things in piles on a single shelf can be problematic when you want to access items at the bottom of the pile.
If you find yourself wearing the same outfits over and over, you may wish to remodel your bedroom closet and reorganize your clothing to give yourself better access to everything. Additional racks, shelves or baskets can provide designated places for different items, making them easier to find and access.
Question #3: Am I Considering Selling My Home?
You may wish to remodel your closet if you’re considering selling your house. Along with high-end kitchens and bathrooms, large, well-designed closets can help to sell your home, and may increase its value. Older homes sometimes have small hallway or bedroom closets. Increasing the size of the closets or installing built-in organization features can influence prospective buyers.
