Learn About Types of Flooring

If you are thinking of installing new floors in your home, you’re probably wondering which type would be best. Many different types of non-carpet flooring exist. Each of these types of floor has its own appeal, as well as its own strengths and weaknesses. Some of the most common types of flooring are:

Hardwood Flooring

Hardwood floors are beautiful and can greatly increase the value of your home. If properly cared for, hardwood flooring can last longer than most other types of floor. Hardwood has the added benefit of being easy to clean, and it can be recoated if you want it to look new again.

But wood flooring is also susceptible to scratches, which may be a problem if you have children or pets. In addition, hardwood floors don’t respond well to moisture, making them a poor choice for bathrooms or other rooms where humidity is an issue.

Laminate Flooring

Laminate flooring is popular in households with small children or pets because of their durability. These designs are attractive, often resembling real wood, tile or stone (while costing much less than the real version of these floors). Laminate flooring is relatively easy to install, and it’s also a more “green” option than wood flooring, as it uses fewer trees.

On the other hand, despite its relative durability, laminate flooring lasts only 15 to 30 years–significantly less than other natural types of floor, such as stone or ceramic. Poorly installed laminate flooring can create an annoying creaking or hollow sound whenever someone walks across it. You can avoid this problem by properly installing the laminate tiles in the first place.

Laminate floors can’t be refinished or recoated like wood floors can. In addition, if you want to sell your home down the road, laminate flooring adds less value to your home than types of floor made from natural materials.

Linoleum Flooring

Linoleum flooring is one of the best environmentally friendly options available, as it’s made from natural materials. It can last 40 years or longer with proper care. It’s also budget-friendly choice, and easy to clean and damage-resistant, making it a good choice for families.

Linoleum flooring is also very difficult to install, and usually requires professional services. Linoleum floors must also be polished, and may require special maintenance to keep the floor from discoloring.

Tile Flooring

Tile flooring may be made out of several different materials, the most popular being ceramic and vinyl. Vinyl tile flooring is particularly easy to install, and it’s a great choice for homeowners on a budget. Ceramic tile is more expensive, but also extremely durable and will last as long as your home does, provided the tile flooring is installed and maintained properly.

Vinyl tile flooring, on the other hand, is not nearly as long-lasting. Plus, it’s susceptible to tearing, and its seams can attract dirt and moisture. Ceramic tile also has its downside: It’s notoriously difficult to install. Plus, it’s a very hard surface and may feel colder to the touch than other floors.
