A home architect interview is your first chance to ask questions and get a feel for an architect’s personality. The more questions you ask during the interview, the better your sense of how the architect works.

Some architect questions are specific to your project and personal needs. Other questions for architects should be asked in any interview. When you interview an architect, bear the following questions in mind.

#1: Is the Project Realistic and Within Budget?

This is one of the first home architect interview questions you should ask. Home architects have a much clearer idea of what can and cannot be accomplished within a particular budget. Describe your project and budget to the architect and ask what he or she thinks. If what you want to do isn’t possible with your budget, it’s far better to know sooner than later.

#2: What Does the Architect Think of Your Project?

How does the architect feel about your project? This is an important consideration. A home architect should approach your project with enthusiasm and interest.

In addition to judging how interested the architect is in your project, this question can lead into other questions during the article interview. Does the architect see any particular challenges in your project? Can he or she anticipate any potential problems or see any areas of opportunity that you missed?

#3: What Kinds of Services Does the Architect Provide?

Some home architects only design residential projects, and leave the project when the design process is finished. Others offer additional services, such as helping find contractors, applying for building permits and overseeing the actual construction process.

Any interview with an architect should explore additional services offered: it may be the deal-breaker when trying to decide between two architects. This is also a good time to discuss architect fees.

#4: Can the Home Architect Describe the Design Process?

This interview question has a twofold purpose. You want to understand how the home architect approaches design, but you also want to get a sense of how much attention the architect will give you during the process. You want to hire a home architect who takes the time to understand your goals and needs for your project, and who is willing to adjust a design to accommodate your goals.

#5: Can the Architect Provide a Portfolio?

Requesting a portfolio during an architect interview is essential. An architect portfolio lets you see the results of the architect’s work. You may see work that matches your needs exactly. If not, did the architect provide previous clients with what they wanted? If so, it’s a good indication he or she will do the same for you.

#6: Does the Architect Have a List of References?

Of course, just because the architect claims he provided clients with what they needed doesn’t mean he did. That’s why it’s vital to ask for a list of references during an architect interview. Contact each reference, ask questions, and confirm anything the architect tells you about that client’s project.
