How Much Insulation Does Your Home Need?
Before you begin a home insulation project, it’s important to determine how much insulation you need. The amount of insulation your home requires depends on a variety of factors, including where you live and local building code restrictions.
If you’re building a new home, you’ll want to ensure that adequate insulation is installed during construction. If you have an older home, improving home insulation can reduce your heating and cooling costs.
Home Insulation R-Values
You should choose insulation for your home based on its R-value. R-value describes the insulating capability of a material, or its thermal resistance. The higher the R-value, the greater the material’s insulating power.
In general, the cost of insulation will depend on a number of factors, including R-value and the type of insulating material. Before choosing insulation, you’ll want to evaluate R-value, as well as different types of insulation, cost and projected energy savings.
House Insulation Recommendations
How much insulation your home needs depends on a number of factors, including:
- How you heat and cool your home
- Where you live
- Your home’s age
- Your home’s structure.
The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) publishes recommendations for residential insulation levels in different parts of the country. These R-values are based on the typical yearly temperatures and climatic conditions of different regions. You can use these guidelines to help determine your home insulation needs.
Online calculators can also help you determine what R-value of insulation you need for different areas of your home. These calculators take into account the location of your home, as well as energy costs and the efficiency of your heating and cooling system.
If you’re building a new home, you should also check local building codes, as a certain amount of insulation may be required in new residential construction. However, these requirements are usually lower than the DOE insulation recommendations.
Calculating Home Insulation Needs
If you’re building a new home, or adding insulation to an uninsulated attic, you’ll want to ensure that your home’s insulation meets recommended levels. However, if you are planning to upgrade insulation in an existing structure, you’ll need to figure out how much insulation you already have in your home.
For instance, in the Northeastern United States, the DOE recommends that you insulate your attic with at least R-49 insulation, your walls with R-13 to R-21 insulation, and your floor with R-25 insulation. In this case, if you already have R-30 insulation in your attic, you can install additional batts with a value of R-19 to make up the difference. As a general rule of thumb, you need about 12-15 inches of insulation in your attic.
While it’s relatively easy to determine if you need additional attic insulation, it can be harder to measure insulation levels in the rest of your home. In some cases, you may want to hire someone to perform a home energy audit, which should give you a good idea of areas where insulation needs to be improved.
