Stenciling a Wall: Step-by-Step
To add variety and color to your home, try choosing a room for wall stenciling. Stenciling gives a room individuality and character without too much work. Some paint stenciling ideas include:
- Alphabet letters in a child’s room
- A border running down a hallway
- Short mottos in a powder room.
Stencils come in a variety of styles and sizes, and it’s an easy DIY project if you understand the basics of how to stencil. Here are some tips to ensure your wall stenciling project is a success.
Step #1: Prepare the Walls for Stenciling
Before you begin a wall stenciling project, wash the wall to clear off any dirt or dust that may have accumulated. If repairs (such as covering holes or sanding) need to be done, do this first before you begin to paint. The wall should be free of bumps or obvious damages where you plan to stencil, as stenciling will only enhance these defects. Paint the wall your base color and allow ample time for it to dry before you begin paint stenciling.
Step #2: Chose a Stencil and Other Wall Stenciling Supplies
Most craft and home improvement stores will carry a variety of wall stenciling supplies (you can also order them online). To ease the burden of moving the same stencil numerous times, it might make sense to buy multiple versions of the same stencil. This will save time and energy once you begin your paint stenciling project.
Step #3: Work on a Paint Stenciling Sample
Test out your paint stenciling abilities on a small sample of the wall. If the stencil is small enough, you can even practice on paper or cardboard before stenciling on the actual wall. This will also allow you to try various color schemes and patterns.
Step #4: Begin Wall Stenciling
Begin by taping the paint stencil on the spot of the wall in which you want to paint. Using the brushes you practiced with (the brush should be smaller than the stencil opening), dip your brush into the lightest color first and begin to paint. Use a circular motion and work from the outside to the inside. Carefully remove the stencil and tape it to the next section of the wall. Keep paint stenciling until the entire length of the wall is complete.
Step #5: Touch Up
When you are finished paint stenciling, allow the paint time to dry. Then, take a small brush and begin to touch up any spots that need attention. Wash your stenciling supplies to ensure that no paint dries on them. You’ll want your stencils to have a smooth texture if you use them in another paint stenciling project in the future.
