The Best Time to Remodel Your Kitchen

Share This: Digg Stumpleupon Google Buzz

The simple answer to this question is that the best time to remodel is when it inconveniences you and your family the least. The next simple answer is that if your kitchen is looking worn and tired, it probably needs remodeling sooner rather than later. Yet another important factor includes whether you have the money set aside to remodel a kitchen.

Remodeling in a Recession

These days, with so many contractors out of work due to the recession and the collapse of the housing market in the US, it may be the right time to remodel your kitchen—if you have the funds. Subcontractors may lower their pricing in order to keep working, and this can result in a lower cost to the you, the homeowner.

If you have spare cash on hand, down times in the housing market are ideal times to get remodeling work done. You’ll likely get more value from your kitchen remodel.

Remodeling to Sell

Generally, it is not a good idea to remodel a kitchen prior to selling a house, as it is unlikely a seller would recoup his or her investment. There are exceptions to this rule, of course. In some cases, when renovating a property for sale, it is necessary to do a kitchen remodel in order to sell the house quickly. A savvy kitchen remodel can help sell a house quickly.

The Right Time for Your Family

If you have a large family, or you cook often, a kitchen remodel can be a huge inconvenience. If you’re contracting out the work, you may want to try to complete a portion of the project while some of your family is away, in school, or on vacation. This minimizes the impact for your family. You’ll also want to avoid remodeling the kitchen around the holidays, if you’re going to host dinner.

The Right Season

Remodeling a kitchen creates havoc. For a month or more, you’ll be without cooking facilities. If you have the money to rent somewhere else in the meantime, you will be spared a great deal of hardship. For most people, this is not an option. This is why summertime, when people can usually grill food outdoors, is the prime time for kitchen renovations. Just keep in mind that other people may want to remodel a kitchen during summer, so contractor prices will reflect this.

It’s also a good idea to look at which season contractors are busiest in your area. In climates with severe winters, very little work goes on during the coldest months of the year. If you can bear going without a kitchen during cold winter months, you are likely to get a better deal and save money.
