DIY Kitchen Remodeling
If you have the time, patience, and some aptitude, doing it yourself can save money when you remodel a kitchen. With the correct tools and a bit of know-how, you can do a job of which you can be proud.
DIY Kitchen Designs
You can save yourself money just by making decisions yourself about kitchen design. Many home improvement stores offer free designs from which you can base your kitchen remodel. Many online websites also have kitchen designs. Magazines, books, and other sources are also good sources for DIY kitchen design ideas.
Here are some things to keep in mind about DIY kitchen designs:
- Ensure sufficient storage space
- Ensure traffic flows smoothly and does not disrupt cooking or preparation
- Ensure adequate ventilation
- Make a work space of 3 feet or more in the prep area
- Make a space from the kitchen sink of 1 ½ feet on one side and 2 feet on the other side
- Put your microwave at eye level
- Place you dishwasher within three feet of the sink
- Plan for good overall lighting, especially around work areas like the sink and stove.
DIY Kitchen Cabinets and Kitchen Countertops
Many DIY kitchen cabinets can be easily pieced together by a handy layman. You may want instead to just refinish or repaint cabinets, as this is more easily done and can renew your kitchen’s look.
Granite or marble kitchen countertops are expensive, though they will last a lifetime. By installing them yourself, the money you save may allow you to afford them. You will need some help in positioning, but asking your best friend or brother-in-law to help will save you money. Make sure, however, that you take very detailed and correct measurements, as you will want them pre-cut. Laminate or other cheaper options may be easier to install, but will not help increase your home’s value.
Affordable DIY Kitchen Remodel Options
If you have only a little experience at remodeling, it may be best to stick to small things. Here are a list of suggestions:
- A lick of paint can change the character of your kitchen, and the skill and expense involved is minimal.
- Building shelves or stand alone cabinets in open spaces in your kitchen can add vital storage space.
- Lights create ambience in any kitchen, and lighting fixtures can be easily installed.
- Tiling is a not too difficult skill to master, and can add a personal touch.
Do What You Know
Unless you are an electrician or plumber, stay away from doing any sort of wiring or plumbing. Leave that for the experts. Any money you thought you could save will be lost when you have to call in a plumber or electrician to repair the damage done.
