In order to properly diagnose roof damage, you should be aware of the different things that can cause damage, and consequentially, impact roof repair cost. It is easy to identify roof damage if you know what to look for. Here are some common indications of roof damage:

Inside, indications of roof damage can include holes or cracks through which you can see the outdoors. Some other signs of a roof leak include:

Types of Storm Damage

There are many types of roof damage that can occur, including storm damage. Storm damage occurs during extreme weather events, sometimes causing the need for a complete roof replacement.

Wind damage may cause roofing materials to blow off, leaving parts of the roof deck exposed. Hurricanes and tornados will also cause wind damage, and either will usually cause roof damage beyond repair. Wind damage can also occur over time, with strong winds pulling out nails that then detach shingles or tiles from the roof, exposing the underlayment.

Hail damage dents shingles and cracks tiles, exposing the underlayment and roof deck. For the average homeowner, it’s difficult to see hail damage, so it’s best to get a qualified roof inspector to review this storm damage. Clay tile roofs are especially prone to hail damage, so professionals don’t recommend these types of roofs in hail-prone locations to avoid roof repair cost.

Other Types of Roof Damage

Sun and heat can cause roof damage, especially those made of wood shake or shingles. Snow can cause ice dams that lead to leaks, and which can eventually rot the roof and cause the need for roof repair cost.

Birds present a particular problem, as they may nest in the roof, exposing parts of the roof deck to the elements. Birds may also utilize thatch, especially if made from local materials, to build their nests, therefore causing roof damage. Woodpeckers too have been known to cause roof damage by pecking holes through wooden parts of the roof.

Not installing a roof correctly will most likely set you up for roof damage. Not having enough nails in a shingled roof will allow shingles to blow off in gusts that wouldn’t usually cause wind damage. Walking on the roof can also cause roof damage, so roof access should be limited to professionals.

Preventing Roof Damage

Regular maintenance and repair of roof damage will keep your roof repair cost down over the long term. Little problems inevitably become big problems if they are not dealt with early on:
