Shake Shingle Roofs

Share This: Digg Stumpleupon Google Buzz

When people think of a shake roof, the first thing that normally comes to mind is the incredibly durable and rustically beautiful cedar shake roof. Wood shake roofs have stood the test of time, and some cedar shake roofs have been known to last nearly a hundred years. Although not as durable as slate or clay tile, wood shake shingle roofs are known to last longer than asphalt shingle roofs if well-maintained.

What is Shake Roof?

Shake shingle roofs are similar to normal wood shingle roofs, though the wood shingles have a rougher texture and are thicker. Wood shake is hewn rather than sawn, which is what gives it a more rustic appearance. This makes them more durable, as well as aesthetically pleasing. Wood shake roofs also have an exceptional strength in comparison to their weight.

Advantages of a Cedar Shake Roof

The advantages of a cedar shake roof are twofold. Cedar shake looks good and is one of the most durable roofing materials there is.

Here are a few advantages of the cedar shake roof:

Disadvantages of Wood Shake Roof

There are a few disadvantages to a cedar shake roof. A wood shake roof’s susceptibility to fire is perhaps its Achilles heel. Though wood shake roofs can be treated to resist fire, these treatments only last for a few years. Cedar shake roof, therefore, shouldn’t be installed in areas that are prone to wildfires. Though wood shake roofing, and in particular a cedar shake roof, is resistant to water, it rots if water collects and the shingles absorb this moisture. Wood shake roofs also requires greater expertise to install, as a poorly installed roof can leak.

Metal Shake Roofs

Interlocking metal shake roof tiles offer a nearly maintenance-free shake roof option. They can mimic wood shake roofs or slate tile roofs, and resists water absorption, algae growth, or rot. As metal shake roofs are made from aluminum, they also resist rust as well. Metal shake roofs can even be installed by novices, unlike wood shake roofs, which require experienced professionals.
