Installing Stone Tile on a Patio Terrace

Building a terrace with stone tile is somewhat similar to laying tile indoors, but there are a few significant differences. Specifically, you’ll need to prepare the base of your patio and make sure it’s level before you begin. Mark out the area for your stone terrace and remove the plants and grass. Be sure that the terrace is level and will allow for drainage.

Once you’ve measured out your area, you should dig down enough to have a layer of grass, a layer of sand and your natural stone tiles. Pour out the gravel first, and then rake it out to make sure it’s even. Next, add in the sand on top of the gravel. The sand should be level and you can ensure this by using a screed to level the top.

Finally, you can lay down the tiles to continue building your stone terrace. In most cases, you won’t have to use grout or mortar. You simply lay down the grout in your desired pattern and then hammer the stone tile in with a mallet. Work slowly to ensure that the natural stone tiles are even. Add edging around the sides of the stone terrace when you are done.
